The Bowmen of Minchinhampton is a small, friendly, longstanding Archery club first founded in 1975 by Stan Gilchrist. Over the years the Club’s members have achieved many awards at County, Regional and National level.
| Most recently one of our members Kieran Slater has gained a place in the Junior GB team and is also a member of the Junior Talent Identification Squad looking for future Olympic archers which is based at Lilleshall. This is a fantastic achievement for Kieran. Kieran started shooting at the age of 11 and has worked very hard both at home, with the support of his family and at the club with the coaching of Keith Parsons and Graham Williams. Now at age 16 Kieran is ranked within the top 5 juniors in the country. Kieran took part in his first International tournament in May 2010, The European Junior Cup in Reggio Calabria in Italy. In July 2011, he travelled to Cyprus with the GB team and shot Ladies FITA ranking round of 1,338, a national record and his 70m score broke the European record. Kieran then progressed through four head to head elimination rounds for a place in the Gold medal match. Kieran won his first set against Jan Rijavec from Slovenia but lost the next two. They then tied the fourth set, leaving Kieran 5-3 down going into the last set. Kieran won the last set 29-28 to take it to 5-5 and a one arrow shoot off. Rijavec shot first and got an 8 and Kieran shot 10 to win the match and the European Gold medal.
As a club we are very proud to have one of our members gain such a high achievement which is well deserved for all the time and dedication he puts in, not only for himself but for the benefit of other club members with his help, advice and good humour. We hope to see Kieran progress within the sport and continue to achieve great things in the future. This is a great achievement for such a small club and we are sure it is due to the expertise of our main coach Keith Parsons and also the supportive, expert eye of long standing member Alan Robinson. |
